Welcome! I'm Holly Montgomery, owner and creative director of the Wytheville Opera Company. Based on the original company that began in 1895, we continue that legacy by offering unique performances, engaging classes, and creative performance experiences designed to ignite a love for music and the arts.
Behind the Mind, Music and Lights of “Gloaming, Nowhere”: an Interactive Experience Presented by Wytheville Opera Company @ Formato Fine Arts.
The World’s first Neo-Appalachian, Afrolachian, Southern Pop Musical and an entirely new subgenre- the “Revusical”
From the mundane to the beautiful. The sad to the mystical. "Gloaming, Nowhere" is precise but unprecious in its Southern Pop telling of a life in Modern Appalachia. The story is spun to us by a storyteller and his bag of tricks as he welcomes us to Nowhere.
Conceived and perfected in Galax, Virginia. The show, much like its creator & performer, J.S. Streible, has had an unconventional existence. Streible was born in the bosom of Atlanta GA, adopted and swept up to be raised in the temperate rainforest of the Southern Appalachians. His county was home to “Deliverance” and the beloved “Foxfire” book and magazine series; as well as a filming location for “Hillbilly Elegy” and “Lawless.” The musical’s simple presentation belies its expansive patchwork origins; informed by life as a statistical unicorn, poetry, and doused in the oral traditions of the mountains and the rest of the world.
Streible has teamed up with his wife, Producer Mackenzie Spivey, to take “Gloaming, Nowhere” to New York City this March for its Drama Desk Award eligible World Premiere at Soho Playhouse. Making it one of the most significant works of Appalachian Theatre in the past 50 years, and potentially the first one-person musical on Broadway.
“Gloaming, Nowhere” has booked a first looks series of performances across Appalachia this February.
The Wytheville Opera Company will host an exclusive, immersive storytelling experience for two nights only on February 7th and 8th @ 7:00pm. Writer & performer J.S. Streible will perform excerpts from the show while explaining the machinations and groundbreaking writing process that is turning heads from Galax to New York. Wytheville is the only stop on the tour to host such an intimate, behind-the-scenes event. Come be part of history in the making!
(Runtime is 90 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. Depending on audience participation and curiosity, it can extend to up to 120 minutes. Tickets are $35 and are available through the Wytheville Opera Company’s website. “Gloaming, Nowhere” is recommended for ages 13 and older.)
The Wytheville Opera Company is based on the original company that was built in 1895. It was housed on the corner of Church and Spring Streets in Wytheville. Sadly, the structure was destroyed by a fire in 1933. 91 years later, the company is making a revival in the historic Formato Fine Arts gallery located in downtown Wytheville, Va.
